Tiny Habits, Big Change

By Dr. Mary | Entrepreneur & Wellness Expert

Have you ever promised yourself that this Monday would be the Monday? The one where you'd finally take charge: eat cleaner, move more, sleep earlier, stress less. And somehow… by Thursday, life happens. Again. The plan slips, the motivation fades, and you’re back at square one.

You’re not alone. And more importantly, you’re not failing!!

Over the years, in clinics, lecture halls, and wellness retreats, I’ve worked with countless people trying to change their habits, their health, and sometimes their entire outlook on life. Here’s what I’ve seen again and again:
Transformation doesn’t come from a burst of motivation. It comes from consistency.

What I remind everyone I work with is this:

Real health isn’t built on grand gestures or perfect plans. It’s built on the small things we do every day. Think of your well-being like a muscle: you strengthen it with regular, gentle use, not by trying to lift something heavy occasionally.

  • Why Small changes work (and yes, science backs it):
Neuroscience shows that every time we repeat a behavior, we reinforce a neural pathway in the brain. With enough repetition, even the tiniest actions become automatic. This is the foundation of what Stanford researcher BJ Fogg teaches in Tiny Habits “lasting change starts small, often absurdly small”.
  • Three micro-habits I personally practice and often prescribe:
  1. A glass of water before coffee.
It’s a small act with powerful impact. Water rehydrates your body after hours of rest and setting the tone for a more intentional, energized morning.

  2. Two minutes of movement every hour.
Whether it's a brief stretch, a few steps, or simply rolling your shoulders, these small movements support your spine and boost circulation. As James Clear wisely notes in Atomic Habits, every habit is a vote for the person you want to become. These tiny actions may seem minor, but they cast powerful votes for your future self.

  3. One deep breath before you react.
It’s amazing how a single breath can shift you from autopilot to awareness and from reactivity to calm presence.

💡 You don’t need a big plan. You just need a start.

Perfection isn’t the goal—presence is. Your health doesn’t demand dramatic overhauls. It simply asks that you show up, day after day, with small choices that honor your well-being.

Because over time, those small things? They become your new normal. And that’s when change sticks
